Now the racing starts

December 4, 2013

4th December 2013 I am now in Igls Austria and the first race is on Friday.  On the way here we stopped at Konigssee for 4 days of training. This was very useful. Konigssee is in Southern Germany and is a very picturesque part of Germany with some fantastic views of the Alps. We had time to spend a few hours at the Christmas market in Salzburg but without touching the gluhwein!

A look at Sochi ahead of The Olympics

December 3, 2013

22nd November 2013 The host country of each Winter Olympics has to open their facilities to the rest of the world for two weeks in the Olympic season. So two weeks ago we headed out to Sochi in Russia for two weeks of training. Whether GB finish up with 2 or 3 sliders at The Olympics those sliders will come from the four of us on the GB Squad. So this meant that all four of us trained on the Olympic track. The training went well and the two weeks of training was enjoyable. Now I have to make sure that …

Ice training and selection races

28th October 2013 It is now a month since I last made an entry in this blog and a lot has happened, possibly not totally in the way I would have liked but certainly leaving me optimistic of what I can achieve over the next few months. As we are the only major nation in this sport who do not have a track the start of every season is spent in Norway at the site of the 1994 Olympic Games of Lillehammer. In the past few weeks the talent squad and ourselves have been training together at this track which …

Second Half of the Summer

30th September 2013 The last half of this summer has been very much like the first half, a case of training very hard across the many disciplines of our sport. However there was very big event in early July. My girlfriend Beth and I went to Portugal for a few days break staying at my parent’s property in The Algarve. Whilst there I asked her to marry me and she said YES! The wedding is planned for May 2015. Towards the end of this period the pressure is building even more with the anticipation of our departure to Norway next …

Halfway through the Summer

June 24, 2013

So it’s that familiar time of year where we put in the hours of hard graft for the forthcoming season and this season is arguably the one that really matters, the pre-Olympic season. I’ve experienced an Olympic run in once before training at Bath University with the team that eventually gave rise to an Olympic champion in Amy Williams, so we are all incredibly aware of what it takes and how to get there. I trained hard that year and took on board a lot from the other athletes and this year it’s my turn to be one of the …

Second Half of the Season – Taking a step back

February 23, 2013

Sometimes in life taking a step back, re-evaluating and making plans to move forward is required to achieve your goals. The second half of this season was exactly that, after the first half of the season being spent on the World Cup circuit under the guidance of Andi Schmidt I moved to the Intercontinental circuit for the second half working with Ex- slider Chris Type. Chris has now entered a coaching role within British Skeleton and who is working closely with UK sport on an elite coaching programme. Chris and I sat down and had a very frank discussion about …
